FOMC, Federal Reserve, Minutes, US Dollar

FOMC, dederal reserve, US DollarThe meeting Minutes are the written or recorded documentation that is used to inform attendees and non-attendees about what was discussed and what happened during a meeting. The meeting minutes are generally taken or recorded during the meeting so that participants have a record of what happened during the meeting.

Minutes usually include the names of the participants, the agenda items covered, decisions made by the participants, due dates for the completion of commitments, and any other events or discussions worth documenting for future review or history.

Exemplary meeting minutes focus on decisions made during the meeting and commitments made by the participants. The commitments are accompanied by due dates and any other details necessary for a shared understanding by meeting participants. The minutes for each regularly scheduled meeting of the Committee ordinarily are made available three weeks after the day of the policy decision and subsequently are published in the Board’s Annual Report.

The Minutes is released by the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC). FOMC is the monetary policy arm of the Federal Reserve System, the central bank of the United States. It works with the Federal Reserve Board of Governors to control the three tools of monetary policy. The FOMC controls open market operations. The Board sets the discount rate and reserve requirement.

The FOMC uses its tools to attain the ideal economic growth rate of between 2 and 3 percent. To achieve that, it must fight unemployment and inflation. The Committee adjust interest rates by setting a target for the fed funds rate. This is the rate that banks charge each other for overnight loans known as Fed funds. Banks use these loans to make sure they have enough to meet the Fed's reserve requirement.

The last Minutes, of the FOMC meeting on January 30-31, 2018, has been released by the Federal Reserve on February 21, 2018 (about 3 weeks after the Meeting).
