Supplied by NCA for the New York Board of Trade, the report measures a number of cocoa beans that have been ground during the reporting period in North America. About 10 chocolate processors contribute their data to the report.

The National Confectioners Association (NCA) is the trade organization that advances, protects and promotes chocolate, candy, gum and mints, and the companies that make these special treats. As the leading association for the $35 billion U.S. confectionery industry, NCA educates the public to help ensure that it understands and appreciates the unique role that chocolate and candy can play in a happy, balanced lifestyle.

Confections are produced in all 50 states, creating jobs for approximately 55,000 workers in more than 1,000 manufacturing facilities across the country. More than 400,000 jobs in agriculture, retail, transportation and other industries rely in part on the sale of confections for their livelihood. For every one job that is created by confectionery companies, another seven are supported in related industries.

The Cocoa Grinds Report supplied by the National Confectioners Association has changed. Beginning with the report for the First Quarter 2009, the report will cover grinds for North America, including Canada, Mexico and the USA. In addition, the reports will no longer include Liquor and Butter Melted.

Cocoa grindings took a surprise fall in the fourth quarter of 2017 and nudged down to a five-year low for the full calendar year, data from the National Confectioners Association showed on Thursday, January 18, 2018. Cocoa processors in the United States, Canada and Mexico reported grinding 116,080 tonnes of beans from October through December, down 1.28 percent from the same period a year earlier and the lowest for the fourth quarter since 2009.

That was below expectations that ranged from 1 percent to 3 percent higher and brought the region’s bean processing in 2017 to 484,620 tonnes, down 0.1 percent from 2016 and a five-year low.
